Ask three different fitted furniture companies what the best material for wardrobe doors is and you will get three different answers. Ask the same companies what they actually use in their best work, and most of them will say the same thing: a combination, chosen deliberately, with different materials assigned to different components based on what each part of the wardrobe actually needs to do.

This guide cuts through the marketing language around MDF, plywood, and solid wood to give you a practical, component-by-component decision framework. By the end, you will understand not just which material performs better in abstract, but which material belongs where in a well-built fitted wardrobe — and why the material specification matters differently for a painted bedroom wardrobe, a period property piece, and a loft room installation.

What Each Material Actually Is

MDF — Medium-Density Fibreboard

MDF is an engineered board made from finely ground wood fibres compressed with resin under high heat and pressure. The result is a dense, uniform board with no grain direction and a perfectly smooth surface. It takes paint, primer, and spray finish exceptionally well, which is why it became the industry standard for painted fitted furniture. Standard MDF absorbs moisture readily and will swell if exposed to persistent damp. MR MDF (moisture-resistant grade) addresses this with a modified resin binder — it is the correct specification for loft rooms, any installation adjacent to a bathroom, and any room with imperfect ventilation. Specifying standard MDF where MR is appropriate is the most common material mistake in bespoke fitted furniture.

Plywood

Plywood is constructed from thin wood veneers (plies) glued together in alternating grain directions. This cross-laminated structure gives it exceptional strength relative to weight, superior screw and fixing retention compared to MDF, and good resistance to warping under load. Birch-faced plywood is the most commonly used grade in bespoke fitted furniture — a hardwood face veneer over a stable birch core, smooth enough to paint and strong enough for carcasses and shelving. Plywood is not typically used for large flat door faces where a smooth painted finish is required, because the grain at the face veneer can telegraph through the paint over time.

Solid Wood

Solid timber is exactly what it sounds like: wood milled from a single piece, without engineered substrates. It is the most aesthetically authentic option and the material most associated with heritage, period property, and luxury bespoke furniture. Oak, walnut, ash, and painted hardwoods are the most commonly specified in UK fitted wardrobe work. Solid wood moves with changes in humidity — it expands in humid conditions and contracts in dry ones. Large flat panels of solid timber will move; proper frame-and-panel construction (Shaker doors, Georgian bar-frame doors) manages this movement by allowing the panel to float within the frame. Solid wood for wardrobe doors almost always means frame-and-panel construction, not a solid flat sheet.

Period Properties: When Solid Wood Is the Right Answer

A Shaker-style wardrobe in MDF can be executed to an exceptionally high standard and will look completely at home in most period properties when painted in the right colour with the right hardware. This is what the majority of high-end bespoke fitted furniture uses, and it is an entirely defensible specification for most clients and most budgets.

However, for the minority of clients who want genuine material authenticity — particularly in listed buildings, properties with significant period features throughout, or projects where longevity and heirloom quality matter as much as storage capacity — solid timber is the correct answer. An oak-framed, oak-panelled wardrobe in a Victorian bedroom is a piece of furniture the room will carry for a lifetime. The same wardrobe in MDF will also perform excellently and look the part; it will not have the same physical quality when touched, and it will not gain value with age the way solid timber does.

The Moisture Question: Why MR MDF Matters More Than Most Guides Admit

Standard MDF and moisture do not mix. This is not a minor caveat — it is the single most common cause of premature wardrobe failure in UK homes. Standard MDF exposed to persistent moisture swells permanently and cannot be returned to its original state. The swelling distorts door faces, misaligns doors in their frames, and compromises the finish.
